IRAQ: WHOSE 'WAY OF LIFE' ARE WE DEFENDING?

Here is a very to-the-point article on The DaVinci Code by Pat Buchanan. I have not always agreed with Pat Buchanan but he makes some very good points in this article. What I find most fascinating is his last line...

"But that it will be a box-office smash, that it is the subject of lavish praise in the press, that it is the best-selling novel of the 21st century, tells us we live not just in a post-Christian era, but in an anti-Catholic culture not worth defending or saving, for it is truly satanic."

Most Conservatives and Republicans support the War in Iraq. They will use the arguments that we are either

a) liberating Iraqis or,

b) defending ourselves, our culture and our way of life against terrorism.

Buchanan, a staunch conservative is opposed to the War in Iraq. I myself have somewhat mixed feelings on the whole affair.

I do however think it is always wise to question oneself and his last line here, in context of the upcoming film and book upon which it is based does so perfectly. If Conservatives and Republicans feel that the War in Iraq is about defending our 'way of life'...what exactly defines the West's 'way of life' in the 21st century?

Are Conservatives/Republicans unwittingly defending a way of life that is based on the destruction of the family, abortion on demand, same-sex marriage, drugs and promiscuity?

An entertainment culture that produces films that mock and ridicule all that they hold dear such as The DaVinci Code, Brokeback Mountain or V for Vendetta?

A culture that vilifies the values and teachings of Christ and will not allow even the most basic of prayers taught to children in a public school system but gives them free condoms?

A culture of 'big government' that seeks to encroach in virtually every element of people's lives?

In the abstract, one could say that we are defending 'democracy', but then again aren't Conservatives/Republicans always saying that the our courts and educational systems are profoundly undemocratic?

I certainly do not agree with leftists who think the War in Iraq is part of a Machiavellian conspiracy for oil. I think President Bush and Prime Minister Blair are basically good human beings.

I have little to no time for the Cindy Sheehan's of the world.

I do however respect thoughtful conservatives or others who are opposed to the war for reasons of a philosophy that questions what culture and 'way of life' exactly it is we are 'defending'.

Here's a thought; perhaps we should allow all of our brave young men and women in the military to get some R & R for two weeks and send over a battalion to the front lines that includes Tom Hanks, James Loney, Jack Layton, Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore.

I know, I know, they would be mowed down inside of twenty minutes. But hey, at least we could finally get Hollywood to produce a kick-ass USO show!

It's funny, but I've vaguely thought this before, but never seen it put into words.
What are we trying to preserve? Kind of disturbing.

Commentators: Perhaps you could study Canadian Alliance for Peace documents with facts on proliferating poppie fields and how Afghani warlords seated in new Afghan government are profiteering from world's main heroin distribution sales.

Consider also the oil pipeline slated to go through Afghanistan and Canada's business involvement in that. The above are not worth sacrificing even one of our Canadian youth -- today we just lost another female officer as our government relegates six hours to debate an already decided issue despite polls showing 54 percent of Canadians don't approve of our so-called 'mission'.

Fact is, it's a business proposition, nothing more, nothing less. The reconstruction effort by CIDA is on hold. THe Afghanis are still starving, engaged in civil war across myriad tribes while heroin trade, Harry Potter and DaVinci Code fantasies prop up our illicit economy.

NDPers sold out Canadians on needed childcare so young and old mothers can booty their bottoms to work outside home and inside home for border wages. Dilemna every month, pay the mortgage or feed the kids -- oh where are the kids? Mothers can hardly keep track of them for outside "push-button" workaholic status and must clean the "digs" all night.

Now there's expressing it bluntly if that what it takes for people to grasp the Canadian scenario.

Wake up Canada. Attend to Afghanistan-like conditions at home. Our soldiers are needed at home, picking up the demented, homeless off our city streets, ensuring communities have safe drinking water -- our aboriginals.

The one percent have been profiting from these wars and will continue to do so while everyone remains locked into partisan buffoonery discussions of little import.

All parties are keeping the alternate media busy anyway as they do as they please. The MPs aren't going to speak up either with our letters of disapproval for their paycheques are at stake as well.

In God's name alone, I will not support the mission with its main focus to protect the world's heroin supply and neither should any reasonable Canadian.

All parties see the profits and there is noone with the moral authority to govern. Canadians our out of choices. However, we surely are not alone in the world in these matters.

We do indeed have the 'freedom' to face an deal with the facts.

Correction in Comment #3 - our should read are.

Very good point, it should be mandatory that leadership spend significant time on front lines. Even more to the point, all business interests CEOs should be required to place their 'books' or 'ledgers' on table for public review. They could similarly volunteer their 'bravery' with perhaps aiding in the 'running of the poppie' supply to their markets?

We evaluate 'question period' -- how about 'answer period' once a day with stipulation that viable answers are required from the floor's Canadian public servants who by my calculation haven't merited their paycheques for at least a quarter century. Unfortunately, for the citizens at large (the voting public), they have no intention of ever parting with their paycheques.
