On Lara Logan tragedy...

1. This is a tragedy.

2. It is a real story and the details – should – be known. I know it throws people into a tiff when the victim is a reporter covering a story, but then that becomes the story and this should be front page news. Reporters cover tragedy all the time…no reason why this should be any different; even if it is awkward.

3. It is part of the story because it shows a fissure in the narrative. The mainstream media narrative on this has been a childish “good Muslim rebels vs. evil Western backed dictator”. This shows that that narrative is false, and again, the media is so unwilling to even begin to understand the brutality that comes to many women in Islamic countries.

4. The phrase used in the release, “brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating,” to me suggests multiple gang rapes. True unmitigated horror. If that is what happened, then that should be told. The term sexual assault is too vague; legally it can mean anything from rape to a mere tweak of the buttock. Why is the left so afraid of confronting this issue?

5. Guaranteed, that either before the end of this television season or during next, at least one of the legal or medical shows on tv will feature an episode where a blonde journalist is gang raped by a bunch of evangelicals at a Tea Party rally while a bunch of Muslims come to her rescue. Guaranteed. Charlize Theron will probably be courted for a feature version that shows Coptic Christians were responsible.

6. The Western progressive left, is out to bloody lunch when it comes to even remotely understanding fundamentalist Islam. Logan is a victim, but she is a victim not only of fundamentalist Islam, but of western ignorance. I hope she continues to report, and the next time she is in a newsroom and a group of her collegues is preparing a piece on the evangelical theocracy or the patriarchal evils of Catholics while lamenting the post 9/11 backlash against the “religion of peace”, she can loudly clear her throat and set the record straight.

Indeed this was a horrible tragedy and even more so due to the silence of the MSM. Not in the least meaning to distract from the tragedy, I admit to having to smile when I read number 5. Yes, no doubt any movie will replace the Muslims with Christian "extremists". I have seen exactly that in so many Hollywood and British productions.

Reporters often see themselves as heroic figures who are somehow above the fray. Little Blonde Cutie found out the hard way that a pretty infidel scandalously clad is definitely NOT above the fray.

I'd bet she was groped, many times, no gang rape. The MSM refuses to distinguish between a rape and a copped feel.

Alain,

Yes. I guarantee that is what will happen. As DeNiro says in The Untouchables...we laugh because it's funny, we laugh because its true.

Lynn,

I hope you are right when you say she was not raped...but I think you are wrong. I understand your frustration that so many reporters see themselves as above the fray but Logan in no way "deserved" what happened to her. She is a true victim and I pray for her recovery. I do hope in the future media conglomerates will think about who they are sending where and do a bit of research before letting people get into the fray. The naivete of portraying the anti-Mubarak side as "Muslim heroes for democracy" is laughable. Some of the comments I read from progressive pundits defending the Muslim Brotherhood make me want to weep in how childish they are. And these are the same people that only need hear the word Catholic to conjure up the worst thoughts of female subjugation.

I'll quote from the headline in the National Post in Canada with regards to a George Jonas article.

"Hold your applause". This is a transition in power but it is far from clear where it is heading.

It saddens me to see a journalist being taken advantage in such a cruel manner, regardless of any political point of view she may have.

Let's not be naive about taking sides in this whole muslim mid east thing. They have been brought up to think very very differently than we have. Be wary because we have the most to lose if such insidiuous thinking takes hold. Personal life, personal respect, personal security guaranteed, and respect for life is paramount in our society.

That is a foreign concept there if you are an infidel.

The other offensive part of this story is the behaviour of CBS and other US media.
Can you imagine if a reporter was dragged out of a Tea Party rally and attacked in the same way? Do you think that the US media would have waited 4 days before mentioning it? Would CBS have issued the terse, barebones statement which they have? Do you think that they would afforded the same privacy to any other victim if she had not been a journalist?

I have to disagree with your assertion that the progressive left doesn't understand Islam. Their thinkers understand fully and choose the position that "enemy of my enemy is my friend".
